Tuesday's List: Best Decorated Neighborhoods

We've been sick in our house most of the month, hence the post on avoiding Strep last week.  This has left us little time to drive about and check out the lights.  When I was a kid we made up a tradition for viewing lights during the first week of school break.  One night we'd pile in the van and take off.  Then at every intersection someone in the vehicle got to shout out right, left, or straight and my dad, the driver, had to obey.  Good thing my town wasn't too big, we never got lost.

You could probably play the right, left, straight game with your own children in Tucson since most of the city is divided into grids or contained subdivisions.  I did some homework for you to find some destinations you might want to end up at.

I may be a little biased but my neighborhood, Silver Pass at Rita Rd. and Athel Tree 85747, is really decked out.  There is even a house with their own short wave radio station (only lasts about 3 houses length on each side) and it's lights dance to the music.  The culdesac of Ironbark Ct. has too many inflatables and lights to count.

According to Tacky Light Tour, 3073 Wildwood Dr has over 150 handmade wood Christmas Characters, 10 different scenes and a lighted archway over the entire sidewalk.  Check the website for a preview in pictures.

50,000 Christmas lights are displayed at the Northwest home of Zack Tarbet.  The address is 2848 West Ribera Place. You can view the lights from sundown to 10 p.m. every night through Christmas.  Tarbet collects canned goods to donate to the Marana Food Bank.  If you enjoy the display, show your appreciation by donating a few cans.

Of course, I would be beat out of town if I failed to mention Winterhaven again.  If you googled "lights" and "Tucson" together, you would get multiple hits for Wintehaven.  The festival at Winterhaven has run since 1949 with the exception of the energy crisis year of 1970.  You can view the lights until December 27th, which is also a drive-through night.

Have you seen any awesome neighborhoods or outstanding houses we can add to the list?

The Giving Tree: An Appreciation

Shel Silverstein's The Giving Tree is one of the many books that our generation has rediscovered upon becoming parents. It's ubiquitous -- found in every library, bookstore, and preschool classroom. And yet, rereading it again for the first time in thirty (or so) years can come as a bit ...Read more >
