Must Have Books: Part 2

December 04, 2008

Last Monday I introduced you to Savvy Source's Books, Toys and More a treasure trove of parent reviews on new and classic items.  Today I will bring you 5 more books that never make it back to the book shef in our house because we read them that much.

Chicka Chicka Boom Boom -  We have loved this book ever since it came into our house as a gift for our oldest son's second birthday.  The rhyme and rhythm are delightful.  The kids giggle every time we get to "OH NO!"  We have also borrowed the full length version that includes the uppercase letters from the library.

The Giving Tree -  This is a childhood favorite of mine.  As a kid, I didn't really get it, but I loved it.  Now that I'm a parent, it makes me cry every time.  The illustrations are simple in true Shel Silverstein fashion but convey the wonderful message of a boy and his tree, the tree that never ceases to give him exactly what he needs.

The Very Hungry Caterpillar -  A classic Eric Carle book.  This little caterpillar can eat and eat and eat.  The simple story teaches counting 1-5, days of the week, and the life cycle of a butterfly.  We love the unique tissue paper illustrations that bring this book to life.

Are You my Mother? - This book came in one of the first shipments of our book of the month type club.  I was overjoyed because I remembered repeatedly borrowing it from the library as a child.  My boys love it just as much and really hope every time that the baby bird will find his mother.

How the Grinch Stole Christmas -The Grinch plays year round at our house in book and video (original 1/2 hour) form.  While I would rather save it for December, how can I begrudge the little ones a story about giving, sharing, and being content?  I think they would sometimes like to be the Grinch, but mostly they have a Cindy Lou Who spirit.

If you are still doing your holiday shopping, head over to Books, Toys, and More to find family tested favorites.  Remeber, books make great stocking stuffers as well.
